  9. Old Abe and Black Hats: Wisconsin in the Civil War

    May 11, 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM @ Tolzman Community Room

    Wisconsin was just twelve years into statehood when the nation drifted into a great Civil War, but its citizens quickly answered the call to restore the Union. Over the next four years, the state sent soldiers to all parts of the war front, while folks back home produced foodstuffs and raw materials to support the war effort. It is a story often overlooked and forgotten. Speaker Lance J. Herdegen will tell you of Wisconsin soldiers known for their tall black hats, a famous war eagle named Old Abe, the Wisconsin Angel, and a three-term governor who lost his arm at Gettysburg.
